CUTTING THE PLANO LIFT RINGS FROM THEIR
FRET AND BENDING THEM
Since posting the page on using Plano Model products S.S. lift rings, there has been a small discussion on the
material being used and how it makes using them difficult. I am posting this page to show the methodology I use
to cut them from the fret and bend them to shape. I use two tools. A pair of XURON #440 nippers to cut the
rings from the fret and a pair of small flat nose pliers to help bend them.
Here I am simply showing a fret full of lift rings. As you can see, I have already used three of them. This size
ring is what is used on the dynamic brake hatch. Material is stainless steel.
The first cut I make is above the ring I want to use. I just nip the fret.
The second cut I make is right at the tag holding the part to the fret. I cut across the fret so the cut ends
approximately where the bottom of the tag is attached to the fret.
After the part is cut from the fret.
The next cut I make is to completely remove the tag from the part. I line up the nippers along the edge of the
part and cut the tag off.
I now have a lift ring ready for
bending.

I want to make it clear also, I have
not dressed up the cut I just made.
What you see is exactly how the
part looks after cutting. It is what I
meant on the first page to cut  as
close to the part as possible so
there is no interference with
making a proper bend.
Now for bending.

I place the part in my flat
nose pliers up to the
half etch centerline. I put
the nose of the pliers
right at the edge of the
half etch line.
With my finger, I bend the part at a 90 degree angle.
Now I put the part between my thumb and index finger and complete the bend.
After I complete the bend with my fingers, I put the bottom of the ring post in my pliers and clamp it hard to
remove as much spring memory as possible.
I then turn the part around, clamp it in my pliers and slightly point the end of the post with a file and the ring is
now ready to insert into the hole I drilled for it.

Since I drill a slightly under size hole, I use these same pliers with the ring in it as seen above and I  push the
post into the hole.
