MODELING A PENN CENTRAL

I had recently lost my job and at the same time taken a break from modeling. I guess those things
happen in life. About a month into unemployment I started modeling again. I picked up from my
good friend Tom Austin an Atlas GP40 and proceeded to build a TP&W unit. About the time I was
getting ready to finish the detail work, I picked up a contract job in California. I was getting back
into modeling again and really did not want to leave my stuff behind. I packed it all up and left for
the west coast. On my way out I stopped in Cherryvale, Kansas to visit my friend Perry Lambert
who bought my TP&W unit. So all I had left was three Kato GP35's. What to do????

I began thinking about my old friend the Penn Central. Although I wanted to build a phase II unit
so I thought maybe a C&EI GP35 would be fun. Not knowing that PC had phase II units, I started
looking through the photos on the Fallen Flags web site. Just for fun I looked at some of the PC
units and that is when I stumbled on the photo above. That was all I needed to see to set my
modeling project in motion and to come back to the first railroad I ever really called my favorite
modeling topic. I am pretty sure I have settled down from roaming the country to find a railroad to
call home. I seem to return to the PENN CENTRAL more often. PC is my home.

Unfortunately for this build, I do not have a camera to take in progress photos. By the time I get a
new camera, this project will be finished. I will take detailed finished photos though.

The basic model will be based on the Kato phase Ic GP35. Using this model gives you the correct
radiator grills and cab sub base. I will have to cut the frame and trim the sill. The fuel tank will be a
2600 gallon tank from an Atlas GP38/40 model. From my research, there were two fuel tank sizes
used on the phase II units. The 2600 gallon tank and what appears to be a 3000 gallon tank.
Comparing prototype photos to the models, the NYC units used the 2600 gallon tank.

These links and photos will give you an idea of the two sizes used. Look at the proximity of the
fuel filler to the nearest stanchion.
