From the following photos you can see that the model is now finished. I did not take any in progress
weathering photos because I was to anxious to get this project finished so I could move onto the next. It took
me from just before the Naperville show last October 2005 until today March 18, 2006 to finish this project. I
took my sweet time on it. Working on it only when I was motivated.

For weathering I used a combination of oil washes, pigments and airbrushing. As stated on the previous page I
started out with a light oil wash over the gloss coat. After that dried, I applied the flat finish to seal everything. I
then applied a few oil washes of light gray and also burnt umber. When the washes dried a bit I used a gray
pliable eraser to remove the wash from raised and flat surfaces so there would be a darker color in the
recesses. I put a heavier wash in the grill areas and used the eraser to clean off the grill wires so there would
not be a uniform look to the dirt. I used pigments brushed into the grill areas as well and set them with a
thinner. You can use a brush cleaner thinner or turpentine to set the pigments. Do not brush the setting
solution on, just lightly dab at it and the thinner will spread on its own. The exhaust was also done with
pigments. I scrub the black pigment into the paint and spread it out over the top. I did not want the super
blackened look so U brushed off as much as I could and then set it all. The deck and recesses along the edge
of the deck were scrubbed with a lighter pigment and then set with thinner. The pilots, step wells and under
frame were more heavily weathered. Again using oil washes and an eraser.

I did not want this model to be super heavily weathered so I went light on it. I believe the key to weathering is
knowing when to stop. Also another tip, walk away for a while or even a day and when you come back, you will
have a new perspective on your work. The pleasure in using oils is if you do get to heavy with it, you can easily
wipe it off and start again. It is not easy to explain how to do weathering. It is more a person technique. The
results are all in your imagination. Do not try to duplicate exactly my results because you never will. Just as I
never will with stuff I like to look at. But use what you can to develop your own technique and I promise you that
you will be very happy. I'll let you in on a secret. A lot of my weathering is done by mistake.

Hope you enjoyed this article. Please fell free to write me if you have any questions. I enjoy sharing what I can.
