PROJECT KATO SD38-2
A STUDY OF MINIMAL DETAIL PROTOTYPE MODELING
My intention for these two models was to restrain myself from tearing into them and doing a super detail
build. It took a lot of that so called self discipline to accomplish this task. These two models are the results of
approximately one years worth of work. WOW, has it been a year. I have to admit there was a healthy dose of
procrastination going on along with a side order of becoming unemployed, getting a job and then becoming
unemployed again. These two models traveled out to San Diego with me for five months and then back home
again. Most of the work was completed in the last 6 months.

Not much to say about these two models. They are of course Kato models and started out in EJ&E paint. I
stripped them and proceeded to detail them. The B.O.M is rather short for these models.

Even though these models were to be a bare minimum detail build, I still needed to make them look the part.
The only real modification I needed to do was to the anti-climbers. Here I took a piece of sheet styrene and
estimated the size from photos. I installed the deck end hand rails. I cut notches in the strip of styrene to fit
around the stanchions and glued the styrene to the top edge of the pilots.  After the glue dried, I cut the
angle into them. This gave me the platform for the ditch lights. I then added the MU receptacle blank off
plates to finish of the pilot details.
The other custom made parts are the circular antenna and the horn bracket.  These parts are simply made
from styrene strip and sheet. I used a circle template and a swivel knife to cut the circular antenna base from.
The horn base is 0.020" x 0.040" strip with scribed lines at the joints and then folded. The strobe light base is
the DA whip antenna drill through for a piece of 0.047" diameter rod. The DA sand hatches were used for the
extra hatch on top of the nose near the front door.
That is it! Not much else to add other than the paint is Scale Coat II Reefer Orange with a little Reefer Yellow
mixed in to brighten it. The base primer coat is silver. The anti-skid paint is engine black. The finish is
semi-gloss and no weathering. Number board gasket decals are from my own custom made decals.
