When I first saw this photo, I knew right away I had to model this set. It represent everything I
like about this era. Classic EMD locomotives, color and grime. They are not rust buckets, just
heavily used motive power. The SD40 used to be bright red, just look at the years of dirt and
grime buildup that have turned the bright red to a dark red. This photo really revived my
motivation to build models again. The start of Conrail was a very colorful period.
This article will be fairly long because it will cover building the three units shown above.
Unfortunately I do not know the road number to the PC SD45, but I can tell that it has a nub
pilot and all low mount brake cylinders. The SD40 and SD45 will be built from Kato models
and the GP30 will be built from a P2K model.
I will not be getting into the super "slippery slope" detailing of the underframe. I am changing
my modeling perspective to get the feel of the prototype. To make each model look like the
prototype without getting to crazy. I call this getting back to the basics of modeling.
The first one on the list naturally will be the ex CNJ SD40 followed by the GP30 and then the
SD45. All models will be DCC sound equipped.
